NEWCASTLE JOURNAL 1926

Good Afternoon to you,

Thank you so much, for all your get well soon messages. I am pleased to report that I am on the mend....the worst is over....hooray!

Last week, I had promised to make some orange marmalade, but because I have been unwell, I was not able to get to the kitchen. Yes, I was ill, but that normally would not have stopped me, but George practically stood on sentry duty, outside the bedroom door, to make sure I did not escape into the kitchen.

I am not very good when I am ill, as rather than stay in bed and recover, I try to get on with things, but of course, it takes much longer to get better. All I kept thinking about was the marmalade I had promised to make,

but, in it's place, I have something that I think will interest you.

The Newcastle Daily Journal

Thursday 14th January 1926

We could have gone to  The Palace Theatre
where we could have seen the pantomime
Puss in Boots or
The Empire
which had phenomenal success with
another pantomime,
The Forty Thieves.
Even today, pantomimes are very popular
during the festive period.
Sadie, my mother in law, took her great
grandson to see his first pantomime, Aladdin,
in December of last year and he absolutely
loved it.
There were lots of  children calling out
"he's over there",
"oh no he isn't", oh yes he is!"
Great Fun.

We can see what is showing
 at the cinema
or as it was known in those days
The Picture House.
Do you fancy a story about intrigue,
gripping mystery and a
beautiful girl's devotion?
Yes? well the film for us is,
The Scarlet Honeymoon.

We could go to the
The Picture House
wearing our dance frock
which we bought for half price at
The Copenhagen.

After dancing the night away, think about returning
home and switching on your lights. Just
like me, you will do it automatically, as it is part of our day to day life, but just
take a look at this advert.
Can you imagine a life without electricity.
This advert is about having electricity installed.

I was so surprised to read about this
divorce, as Ivy (not my grandmother)
seemed to be leading two lives....but
was caught out.
How distressing it must have been
for Mr Ivan Owen Belgrave Shirley to see
his wife leave on the afternoon of their
wedding day and not to see her again
until he caught sight of her in London
accompanied by another man.

.....and true to my heritage,
I could not leave you without a mention
about the weather.....even if it was in France.
It seems in January 1929 France was
experiencing some very cold weather.
Even the French Riviera had snow!

I hope you enjoyed reading a small part of this newspaper, I will show you more later.

Have a lovely day and I will see you later in the week.

  2. Oh Daphne, I hope you are well on the mend! I suffered the flu last week as well and it was nasty.

Love the newspaper clippings. I had to chuckle at the divorce article...not at the man's misfortune but the fact that the newspaper actually printed such a story! I guess there was no privacy back then was there?

Have a Blessed week and I hope you are feeling better. Hugs

  3. Hello, Daphne

It's quite fun to look at these old newspaper articles. When I bought my house, there was a wooden trunk in the basement, lined with newspaper pages from the 1950's. I quite enjoyed seeing the old ads and headlines.

Have a lovely week; I'm glad you're feeling better.

  5. Hi Daphne!!

I'm so happy to hear that you are feeling better!! Being sick is no fun and I laughed when you mentioned, that your husband was standing guard to make sure that you stayed in bed.

Reading old papers, books or any articles takes you back to another world from the one you live in. I have an old magazine from London and it so funny reading some things that they did back then.

    Take care!!

  6. Very fun Daphne, I work in a library and last we were reading a newspaper from 1950 where we could read in an article that blonde girls commit suicide more than brown hair girls. And a lot of things like this It's funny to have a look to the past.

  7. Hi Daphne,
You poor dear not feeling well, rest is best. I love marmalade but have never made it. I look forward to seeing yours. The newspapers were so much fun, such a different world then. We use to take the newspaper and now we read the news over the internet. Thank you so much for always leaving me such sweet notes I always smile when I see you have visited.
I tried to leave you a note last week but had trouble leaving one, I think Google was having problems that day. so I hope you get this one.
Have a sweet day and Happy Valentine Week, Elizabeth

  8. Oh Daphne those were fun to read. Old newspapers have such quirkiness that we can't quite fathom. So funny. I loved your editorial portions, too. Hahahahaha. (see email)

  9. Good morning Daphne!
I am glad you are feeling better. Being sick is not fun.
It is exciting to read old newspaper articles. I found several pieces of papers when I moved to my house, which was built in 1943.
    Have a lovely week! Ina

  10. Daphne,
I sure hope you're feeling well again. :( It seems so many people got it bad this year. I always enjoy the treasures which you feature, and congrats on being showcased on Make It Pretty Monday! I was clapping for you. :) Lastly, thank you for your kind comments on my recent post regarding the little MAJJ. I pray that my husband and I will also be blessed 42 years from now, as you and your husband are.

    XO,
    Meredith

  12. Oh Daphne, I enjoyed that so much. Like the old book you showed us, I feel like we're sitting together enjoying a cup of coffee and looking through the old newspaper together. What fun! Is that a newspaper you keep around the house? Is there significance to the date on the paper? I thought the ad for electricity was so interesting. I never knew that they would come and install the lights (lamps included) and the occupier of the house would only have to pay a small monthly rental, depending on how many lights were installed. My how times have changed! I had to chuckle about the divorce too. Poor man. It's funny what items made the news though, when there were only local things to report about because there was no television yet. So interesting. Glad you're feeling better, and thanks for sharing with us!
